When the woman left the house that morning, little did she know that her life would be changed by late afternoon. As she made her way to the market she couldn’t help but notice that large crowds were gathering in the streets. Local gossips were a buzz with the news that a great teacher, and even better, a great healer was in the town. Her heart must have skipped a beat when she realized how close she was to the man that could heal her condition. For twelve years she suffered from what the Bible says was an issue of blood. Some of the oldest manuscripts of the Gospel of Luke tell us that the woman had spent all her money on physicians, obviously without results.

Any of us who suffer from an on going medical condition knows what desperation the woman felt. She had tried everything and spent all she had and she was no closer to being healed than when she started. But today would be different as she found herself drawn along by the crowds. From the edge of the throng she could see the surge engulfing the healer and the noise was deafening. It was now or never and with a determination that sprang out of desperation she pushed her way towards Jesus, the great physician.

With determination she entered the great press around Jesus. She told herself that she would not give up until she could meet the physician and beg for his mercy upon her. But as she drew near something changed within her and she was over come with the faith that if she could just touch Him everything would be fine. “And a woman who had had a flow of blood for twelve years and could not be healed by anyone, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His garment; and immediately her flow of blood ceased.” Luke 8: 43, 44

Theologians have filled thousands of pages trying to figure out what exactly happened in the miracle. What’s important is the woman had faith to believe that even if she could touch Jesus He would heal her. Many years ago when my son was very young I couldn’t get my car to start. Everything I did and tried just did not work. My son sat patiently while I tried everything. Finally he spoke up and said, “Daddy, why don’t you pray about it?” As a minister I believe in prayer, but I also thought God wasn’t worried over my car. However, I couldn’t disappoint my son and not pray, but I wasn’t sure what I would tell him when the Lord didn’t answer. I prayed, tried the car and it went like a charm. When I turned in my driveway the car died. I like the faith of the woman who touched Jesus garment and the faith of my son who believed God starts cars. It says our God is so big He can handle everything.

Luke tells us that immediately upon touching Jesus the woman was healed. Then he adds this amazing detail, “and Jesus said, ‘who was it that touched me?’ When all denied it, Peter said, ‘Master, the multitudes surround you and press upon you!’ But Jesus said, ‘Someone touched me; for I perceive that power has gone forth from me.” Luke 8: 45, 46 ┬áNow the woman comes trembling with fear and falls at the feet of Jesus and confesses she was the one who touched His robe. Maybe she thought He would rebuke her or even worse, undo the miracle. Instead, He said, “daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace.” Luke 8:48

Those are the same words Jesus speaks to us today. We are sons and daughters of God and our faith makes us well. The result, we walk in peace because we have the assurance Jesus loves us and heals our broken spirit.
